#363 – Unrecognisable mishmash

Mon 1 Feb 10 - by lensco - 0 Comments

More dancing tunes this week, with people like Seiji, MCDE, Michna, Redshape, Joy Orbison and Untold making sure you don’t get cold in these snowy temperatures (over here at least). Also, lots of fusion happening in music these days, as hiphop, house, broken beat, d’n'b and dubstep are routinely mashed together to create something unrecognisable but ultimately very enjoyable.

Wesseltoft & Schwarz duo

Mon 25 Jan 10 - by creaminal - 0 Comments

In early 2009, Norwegian pianist Bugge Wesseltoft met up with Berlin’s producer and DJ Henrik Schwarz for an improvised session exploring their collaborative force to combine acoustic jazz with electronic music. For both of them, that special night sparked off a new beginning of a future project. Since then they performed together in various gigs and now they are already recording their album for a release in 2010. Yesterday they published the first glimpse of how they work together in Bugge’s studio room in Oslo:

Here you can watch the duo performing ‘Dreaming’ at Montreux Jazz Festival 2009 (more videos here)

Don’t forget to join their official facebook page and go to their myspace site for some demo previews and live dates. On 11th of February, they will be holding a lecture at Red Bull Music Academy 2010 in London followed by a live performance in Royal Albert Hall alongside Carl Craig and more a day later. Get your tickets here!

Plus: Henrik Schwarz has shared his own made and heavily used software called Schwarzonator for Ableton heads.

#362 – Spotlight on Mark E

Thu 21 Jan 10 - by lensco - 2 Comments

Since he entered the scene with a bang five years ago with his edit of Womack & Womack, Mark Evetts has been unleashing bomb after bomb. Rather than simply making a tune twice as long and adding a kick drum, Mark E skillfully dissects the groove out a track and crafts a totally new piece around it. And his originals are equally good, slow house burners that you can’t help nodding your head to. The release of his first album (a compilation of his edits) is the perfect occasion for a full hour of Mark E.

But we start with some great tunage by Floating Points, Isoul8, Untold, Instra:mental, Westpark Unit, JtotheC, …

A chat with Dynoo about Gum Dragon

In the last episode of the Beyondjazz podcast we invited Dynooo to our studios. He’s running the hottest music store in hometown Gent, and is on the verge of releasing a new project: “Gum Dragon”. No escaping the fact we had to invite him for a little chat and guestmix. Here’s some extra info for those not that fluent in Dutch. (We can’t blame you.)

Gum Dragon EP and release party

One of the first times we got introduced to Dynooo, was through his Sol Waters project on the City Wurl label of Billy Palmier. While back then he was both an mc as beat producer, the latest years have seen him focusing on producing. “Rooted in hip hop’s rich soil, but definitely branching out beyond the edges of the genre, Dynooo’s music is for fans of the likes of Daedelus, Samiyam, Hudson Mohawke and next-gen beatcrafters alike.” That includes us.

His live shows at the Release event (a joint effort between Brussels crews Onda Sonora, On-Point and Laid Back), and at the Pluto Festival, already gave us an impression of his sound today. Jay Scarlett and Cinnaman’s Beat Dimension compilations also featured a track by him.
That sound is now coming to you on wax. Dynooo: “The upcoming EP is called ‘Gum Dragon’. It’s not a complete style switch from previous own releases. It’s been more of a gradual process, looking for a sound that … well, is less boring than the shit I used to make (laughs).”

Dynooo’s Gum Dragon is centered around Fuh Real, a song that features Swedish singer Naboobia laying down a floaty vocal over a high-end 80’s r&b inspired club banger. The rest of the mini-album is a collection of glitching electronics that ranges from soothing (Furbee) to smashing (Cawf Drop) and psychedelic (the Beyondjazz favourite: Will Flattened). Make sure to download the sampler of the EP.

Dynooo: “The music has left for the vinyl pressing now, and will hopefully be available next week. Hopefully, because next week we’re having a release party in Antwerp. I’ve invited Cupp Cave and Richard Colvaen from Bretzel Zoo. It’s in Kavka, on the 22nd of January.”

Next to the Gum Dragon EP, you might want to watch out for a bunch of other releases Dynooo’s got in the pipeline for 2010, including a feature on a project of Cupp Cave. Dynooo: “And hopefully a more live shows.”

Mac Fly

Since November 2008, Gent is one shop richer. In the Mac Fly concept store Dynooo sells music, clothing, kicks and other random cool stuff. When asked if he opened up this store in search for a place he’d love to go shopping himself, Dynooo says: “Well, that’s it, in fact. Dat heb je goed gezegd.
Every now and then there’s expositions. Dynooo: “A few weeks ago we did an expo by Melika. She’s a student photography of whom we displayed some of the recent work. In the past we also set up expositions in cooperation with Laid Back. Those were more focusing on street art.”
Dynooo: “For future events at the store I’m thinking of maybe doing a listening session around the Gum Dragon ep. Those things just happen spontaneously.”

The biggest selling item in the shop has been the Mac Fly shirts and sweaters, so far. Dynooo: “I wouldn’t call it a clothing line, but it sure would be fun if it evolved in that direction. I’d need some funding for that, but yeah, it’s cool to know people appreciate the prints I’ve designed myself.”
We suggest you to subscribe to the Mac Fly blog or check Dynooo’s tweezies to stay informed.

Download the mix

Dynooo’s guestmix for Beyondjazz is a one hour trip with 31 beats going all over the place. Dynooo: “The mix is a bit of everything. Music I love and want to get heard. During a live show I’d go a bit heavier, but the blueprint of this one is definitely the same.”
Check for music by Rustie, 8bitch, GLK, Flying Lotus, the (”much overlooked”) Two FingersCarlos Nino, and a couple of Dynooo exclusives. Head over to the podcast to check out the full mix.

#361 – Dynooo in studio

Sun 17 Jan 10 - by lensco - 2 Comments

Fellow Ghent resident Dynooo is a busy boy: he’s the shopkeeper of the kick ass shop called Mac Fly, and he’s set to release his Gum Dragon EP later this month. A good reason to invite him over to the studio for a little interview and a guestmix with 31 beats going all over the place in less than an hour! If you want to read more about Dynooo, check this piece on Gum Dragon and Mac Fly.

(Audio quality is still not what it should be, we’re working on it!)

#360 – Newness

Sun 10 Jan 10 - by lensco - 0 Comments

A new year and a new studio for urgent.fm – yay! But for the playlist though, we used the same old recipe – tried and tested – of nujazz, hiphop, house, broken beats and a dash of dubstep.

Note: the quality of this recording may be a bit under par, as the new studio isn’t fully set up yet. Still, enjoy!

Best In Music 2009 – Lensco

Tue 5 Jan 10 - by lensco - 3 Comments

2009 was a great year for music again, and with the year end traditionally comes a plethora of ‘best of’ lists. But rather than simply drop a bland enumeration of the 10 best records of the year, we decided to broaden the scope and list the best things to happen in music in 2009, and write a line or two about each. First up is Lensco’s selection:

  • Best tunes of the year – Joy Orbison: Mr. Orbison single-handedly injected a much needed boost of musicality into the dubstep genre. While they’re not rockit-science his tracks effectively moved people, on the dancefloor as well in the living room sofa.
  • Phlash & Friends – Deep Electronic Sound: No silly downtempo tracks or interlude filler, but more than a dozen excellent straight up house tunes where the guests actually matter.
  • Trend of the year – Dubstep maturing: It really became a proper genre with a wide spectrum of interesting branches. Also, the Dutch dudes 2562 and Martyn came, saw and won the dubstep match, big time.
  • Tortoise – Beacons Of Ancestorship: I presumed them dead, but fusing their old post rock style with Ammoncontact like beats, these lads made one the most interesting albums of the year.
  • The Cinematic Orchestra – The Crimson Wing: Mystery Of The Flamingos: Utterly beautiful nature documentary score, with a unique take on classical music from Swinscoe and the boys.
  • Best podcast – Bopstar Radio Sessions: Excellent house, bruk, soul and jazz, with plenty of exclusives and previews. That show makes me lookup and buy tunes.
  • Nicolay – City Lights Vol. 2: Shibuya: An album like they don’t make ‘em a lot these days, one where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. The styles and genres don’t matter, Shibuya is about a story, impressions and athmosphere.
  • Best producer – Atjazz: Be it remixing or producing original tracks, Martin had a consistent high quality output in the past twelve months, with beats and sounds to die for.
  • Best music related movie – Still Bill: So maybe I’ve seen very few music related movies last year, this one is still a beauty. If you not only want to learn about the music but also about the personality of Bill Withers, watch this gem.
  • Also: great albums by Little Dragon, Kira Neris, Zero 7, Tosca, Black Jazz Consortium, Aybee, Clara Moreno, Emanative, Tuomo, the B12 Records Archives, …
