I looked at the soul & jazz records I had in my collection, picked out my absolute favourites and tried to glue some of those together in a 2 hour music only (*) mix that made sense. Did you know Beyondjazz started as a section of a weekly classic jazz show? From Latin to Soul to 50’s Jazz and Spiritual Jazz, this show brings you so much classic tunes.

This week we turn our spotlight on Lee Jones aka Hefner. Back in the nineties he made ambient (together with Fink) and drum’n'bass, but in ‘98 he released the An Evening With Hefner 12″, laying the foundation for his signature downtempo sound. He went on to release the acclaimed album Residue and the remix collection Reworks, and in 2004 he produced the debut album of vocalist Josée Hurlock. After that he focussed more and more on house music with a slew of releases on Aus Music and Playhouse. For years now there have been rumors about a second Hefner album, but we didn’t wait for it to give you an overview of the Hefner era! To warm up for the mix, we inserted a bunch of harps and jazz.
