#345 – City Of Angels

Wed 9 Sep 09 - by oemebamo - 16 Comments

Without a doubt the most exciting music this year comes from one city, and one city only: Los Angeles. Just returned from an awesome trip through wonderful California, I just had to put a whole show together with beats and melodies from the weird but inspiring city that Los Angeles is.

Not only keeping it strong production-wise, LA’s home to quality DJ’s, amongst others The M*F*cking Gaslamp Killer, who’s recently been getting the attention he deserves. “Loaded full of evil psyche beats, murderous drums, eerie interludes, dark downtempo, wonked-out bonkers, hip hop bumps and and dubstep upsetters” * his live dj-sets, but certainly his recorded mixes, take you to all new places … The other cat that’s opened my eyes, and made me love the 80’s again, is Pasadena’s Dâm-Funk. His Chart Toppers mix (together with Stones Throw’s James Pants) is excellent car-cruising material. A third mix is Kutmah’s just released Live Mix ’09, which I copped at the Poobah Records Store. I couldn’t resist playing you some teasers from these mixes because I believe their vibe is an integral part of the sound of LA. These three mixes are what I’ll be recommending over and over to my friends in the months too come. I hope you can still find your copy of them.

poobah is ok, nothing like ameaba, i found the first co-op releases at ameaba for like a dollar, i dout if any of those poobah guys know that labels like archive, visions, schema, etc exist.

@texxeen hehe, you might wanna watch the beyondjazz twitter stream (twitter.com/beyondjazz) (or my personal one twitter.com/oemebamo). we posted some cali/la related tweets there that gave a hint of me being there. would’ve been great to meet-up, but i’m sure one day i’ll be back :D.

Only been to the Amoeba store in San Francisco, was impressive too, indeed.

great pictures. we made part of that same trip last year. funny you took some of the exact same pictures, like that “make a wish” one. california is probably the best place on earth right now and when it comes to music, it’s all about LA indeed. i thought amoeba SF was a little better than LA and of course poo bah is small, but they do sell some LA stuff you won’t find anywhere else. can’t wait to be back.

@catarino: well, that’s the “The Gaslamp Killer – Weeping-Waiting_Gnashing Of Teeth Forever!” from the playlist … it’s not really a track, it’s part of the mixtape, and goes on for 10 minutes (as you can hear in the podcast), throwing in all kinds of other tracks.
